How to Arrange a Blood Test
If the Doctor asks you to have a blood test, please make an appointment with our Phlebotomist. You may be required to undergo a fasting blood test (usually for cholesterol or blood sugar), which means that you cannot eat food for at least 12 hours before the test. You should also refrain from smoking or taking exercise and avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours. If you are asked to have one of these tests, please inform the Receptionist so that she can arrange for you to have an early morning appointment so that you can fast overnight.
Most test results are available a week after the test, although some can take up to 14 days. You may be asked by the Doctor to come back to discuss your test, or if there is a problem with the test result we will contact you by telephone. In most cases, you can contact the Receptionist at the surgery where you will be informed of your result over the telephone.
When to Call About Your Test Results
If the Doctor has sent away for a blood or urine test, you can telephone the surgery for your results. Please note that some results can take up to 14 days to be returned to the Practice. Test results are only given to the patient in the interest of confidentiality.
